Living close to seabed, a grayish fish with three dorsal fins was found abundant in North Atlantic from where Portugal—along with France and England, started sending boats annually on the 16th century. A lengthy ocean voyage in those times would call for a massive stock of food and because refrigeration was not yet available, sailors, voyagers, and yes, conquerors of newfound lands thought of preserving what could be eaten—like this fish.
